Apollo Eyes Africa for 3 Hospitals

Eyeing the African market, Apollo Hospitals is planning to set up hospitals in Nigeria in west Africa & Tanzania and Addis Ababa in east Africa. While it has planned a 300-bed facility in Nigeria, it is yet to finalise the size of the two hospitals in Tanzania and Addis Ababa. Prathap C Reddy, chairman of Apollo Hospitals, said: "The Nigerian facility would be a 300-bed hospital. We would set that up as a joint venture project with a local partner." Present at a seminar organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here, he said, the negotiations for the other two hospitals in Tanzania and Ethiopia is yet to be finalized.
Apollo has also planned to set 10 hospitals in tier II cities in India, with a capacity of 300 beds, in the next 10-15 months. Investment in each of the hospitals would be close to Rs 40 crore, Reddy said. The target is to set up 10-15 hospitals in metro and non-metro cities creating 3000 beds in next one year, he said. The Rs 900 crore Apollo Hospitals Group is also interested in setting up an integrated educational facility for medicine. "We need universities for medicine with new curriculum, as the existing syllabus is outdated," he said. The group is looking for almost 200 acres to set up the educational facility with an investment of Rs 500 crore. The group is also planning to set up a cancer hospital at the existing premises of Apollo Gleneagles, Kolkata. It has earmarked an investment of Rs 70 crore for this project.
