About 22 rural communities in Zamfara State, with a combined population of 70,000 people have been provided with solar based electricity by the department in charge of Millenium Development Goals [MDG], said the state coordinator of the programme, Alhaji Sanusi Hashim.
Speaking with THISDAY in Gusau yesterday, Hashim said the benefitting communities were drawn from the seven local government councils selected to benefit from the MDGs activities across the state. He said the seven local councils have paid N126m as their counterpart funding for the projects, adding that about 59 other projects were executed by the MDGs in the targeted local councils. In addition, he said no fewer than 20,000 youths are to benefit from vocational training to be funded by his office.
The Coordinator said that due to the number of the expected beneficiaries, six more vocational training centres will be established to complement the 14 already in use in all the 14 local government areas of the state. He said since the establishment of the office in Zamfara last year, 59 projects had been executed in various locations across the state.
He said of the total number of projects executed, 29 are primary health care centres equipped with modern and basic facilities needed for effective dispensation of health care delivery at the grassroots level. The coordinator said 22 rural communities have been provided with solar-powered electricity, while plans are underway to introduce macro-credit scheme to benefit the rural folk.
