A total 6,500 farmers in Zamfara are to benefit from government's irrigation loan scheme as the state intensifies efforts to reactivate the Bakalori irrigation project. The irrigation programme is being executed under the aegis of the Zamfara Comprehensive Agricultural Revolution Programme (ZACAREP). ZACAREP co-ordinator Dahiru Lawali told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Gusau that 8,000 hectares would be cultivated.
According to him, government has directed traditional rulers in local government areas close to the irrigation project to register interested cooperative groups to ease the disbursement of the loans. He said that such groups would be expected to pay a deposit of one quarter of the total loan they were asking for, before picking their cheque. The co-ordinator explained that a cooperative group must have at least 20 people as anything less than that would not be accepted. Lawali said that the irrigation programme would begin in November.
